Dorothy supports social-purpose leaders and their boards in finance and planning. She mixes coaching, ongoing finance work and training to raise the skill level of the whole leadership team. Her clients are able to boost their operations while also deepening their understanding of what drives their costs and how funding of various kinds fits with their plans.
Dorothy’s areas of expertise include:
Financial Management: creating, synchronizing and updating budgets, multi-year forecasts, cost allocations, grant spend monitoring, funding tactics and fiscal policies; also refining people-centric workflows with modern accounting and data systems. Her approach to budgeting and financial modeling draws on cross-functional team input and produces clarity for boards and effective grant application proposals.
• Governance: advising on board recruitment, policy updates, and training boards on their role in financial health. She has guided many organizations through mergers and supported fiscal sponsorships as well as assisting and serving on finance and audit committees.
More than fifteen years as an executive director and then a consultant has honed her quantitative and facilitation skills. She is passionate about the power of social-purpose sector, in areas such as housing, land use and human services. She embraces virtual technology and offers affordable rates.
In addition to her own client work, she is currently affiliated with BDO, providing financial management consulting to nonprofits nationwide. She is also a member of the Interim Executive Solutions management pool and an advisor for The Carrot Project helping farmers in the Northeast. She has provided recruitment support to numerous nonprofit boards and has served on a number of boards including as Board Chair of Capital for Change, a Connecticut-based Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). She currently serves on the Highstead Foundation board.
Prior to moving to rural Connecticut in 2002, Dorothy worked in venture capital, the telecommunications industry and management consulting in Europe. She graduated with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Princeton and earned an MBA from Wharton. Dorothy lives in western Connecticut with her husband, a flock of entertaining chickens, and occasionally joined by their two children pursuing their own careers.
